Section A- TV drama

Alvarado’s racial stereotypes (1978)

Dangerous-
Tariq from Waterloo road is represented as dangerous, he is very disruptive in school and
has broken many of the rules set.
The representation is negative as it then makes
the audience stereotype all Asian teenage males to be the same as Tariq. This representation shows Asian people to be subordinate as they are trouble makers don't care about others in society. There are additionally minimal Asian teachers in Waterloo Road which could suggest to a new viewer that all Asian people are viewed in this way.

Exotic-Patrick Trewman can fit into Alvarado's racial stereotype theory as he has had a different background and upbringing to the other characters featured in the tv drama. He is represented positively throughout the drama and is very respected and looked up to in his family as Denise and Kym see him as a father figure. However in the square he is not as dominant as Phil Mitchell and David Wickes (who dominate the square) are both white suggesting that people from the west Indies are subordinate in society.
This could relate to Hall's idea of dominant ideology.

Pitied-
Lula from Waterloo Road fits the element of
pity as the programme shows her being
deported from Britain. We are made to feel sorry for people which the same ethnic background as Lula as it is stereotypical that a lot of African characters have come to england illegally. Lula's character is represented positively within the school as she has applied for university and has a lot of friends, however overall she is seen as subordinate as her and her family have broken the law by living in Britain.

Humorous-
Kym and Dexter from eastenders are both good examples of
humorous characters. This is the thrid section within Alvarado's
racial stereotype theory. Both of these characters are fun and
loving fitting the catergory of humorous. The audience begin to love these characters and they create a sense of verisimilitude. These characters have no authority in society they are just family members to someone more superior. The representations of both these characters are positive however they are subordinate in society which represents Afro-Caribbeans to be an inferior ethinicity in society.
